    Rationale

My motivation for this project is deeply rooted in my desire to capture and convey the full spectrum of Hong Kong's essence. Having lived in this city for over 17 years, I've come to understand that Hong Kong transcends its stereotype as merely a bustling metropolis and "concrete forest." Beyond the skyscrapers lies a rich emotional landscape and many layers that often go unnoticed. Through the use of evocative music and dynamic videography, I aim to illustrate the transformation of Hong Kong from day to night, highlighting not just its vibrant activity, but also the struggles faced by its underprivileged residents. The project will also showcase the city's stunning nighttime vistas, which have rightfully earned it the nickname "Pearl of the Orient." These elements are integral in depicting the true identity of Hong Kong, revealing the lesser-known aspects that contribute to its complex character.

Structure of the piece - "Cityscapes of Central"

    Composor: Samuel Mok

"Cityscapes of Central" is a musical exploration of Hong Kong, presented in three movements by a chamber orchestra of 24 youth musicians. This suite captures the city's rhythmic diversity, from its energetic mornings to its reflective evenings, offering a vivid portrayal of both its bustling life and quieter moments. Each movement is intricately designed to reflect different aspects of Hong Kong's dynamic atmosphere and its hidden narratives.

    1st Movement: "Bustling Boulevard"

The opening movement sets the stage with a portrayal of Hong Kong's vibrant morning activity. Employing mixed meter and the A Phrygian mode, "Bustling Boulevard" reflects the city's dynamic energy as residents commence their day. The orchestration includes rhythmic percussion and col legno techniques on the strings, which build in intensity alongside accelerating tempos and swift piano arpeggios, effectively mimicking the bustling interactions and growing momentum of morning commuters.

2nd Movement: "Elegy for the Forgotten"

As the day wanes, the second movement offers a somber reflection on the city’s marginalized communities. The "Elegy for the Forgotten" is characterized by a poignant melody performed on vibraphone, celesta, and harp. This movement not only evokes a deep sense of nostalgia but also pays homage to the resilience of the city's overlooked and enduring spirits, including those of grassroots workers and other disadvantaged groups.

3rd Movement: "Whispers from the Fragrant Harbor"

The concluding movement shifts to the serene setting of Victoria Harbour at dusk. "Whispers from the Fragrant Harbor" features a solo flute and clarinet, supported by gentle piano and glockenspiel. This section revisits the thematic motif in a wistful manner, enhanced by subtle blue notes and shimmering, resonant chords. The tranquil and meditative atmosphere reflects the peaceful beauty of the harbor, providing a soothing closure to the day’s narrative.
